Reading and Using the PhotoVu Logs
PhotoVu Logs were designed for two purposes: 1) To help the end user customer troubleshoot their PhotoVu and 2) To assist PhotoVu Technical Support personnel with issues relating to your PhotoVu.
Within each of the logs, there is a large amount of information. Some portions are only intended for PhotoVu Technical Support personnel so it is normal to see characters, phrases, or codes that do not make any sense to you.
General Log Format
PhotoVu Logs generally have the following format:
- Line Number
- Module::Code
- Date and Time
- Status Descriptor ( iii - information, *** - error, +++ - command successful )
- Log Message
You should mainly be concerned with the Date and Time, Status Descriptor, and the Log Message. Many of the most common issues can be resolved just by looking at the overall PhotoVu Combined Log.
Using the PhotoVu Logs
In some sections of the PhotoVu Web Administration program, you will see a link to view the log for the feature you are using. Under Advanced Settings, Logs, you can access every log on the PhotoVu. Please note, if you restart your PhotoVu, your logs will be initialized and all past information will be lost. If you have a problem, it is a good idea to read or save your logs before restarting your PhotoVu.
When you click on Advanced Settings, Logs, you will see the following:

The following is a description of each of the logs:
- PhotoVu Combined Log: This is the combined log for all PhotoVu functions. When you view this log, you will see a time based snapshot of all actions that have occurred on the PhotoVu. It is a good idea to start with this log for your initial troubleshooting and to determine which log to view below.
- Photo Show Playlist: The Photo Show Playlist is a log of all images in the playlist. This list was created by the Photo Show engine and the PhotoVu will follow the order from top to bottom. Please note, the playlist is a result of any Photo Show options you specify. For example, if you are playing randomly, this list will be in a random order.
- Photo Show Log: This is a log of all Photo Show actions. Mainly, you will use this log to see which photos have been shown, information on that photo, and if there was an error in loading a photo. If you get an error loading a photo, this could be due to wireless network interference, a corrupt image, a bad filename, or a path to a filename (photo) that does not exist. Please check all possibilities before sending questions to PhotoVu.
- Photo Directories Log: This log is used when you get an error after you try to add a Photo Directory.
- Photo Albums Log: If you are having problems with the configuration of your Photo Albums, try viewing this log. Also view the Photo Show log as this will give you additional information when you Play your Photo Show.
- RSS Log: If you are using RSS Feeds, this will be one of the most important logs you view. There is a great deal of information in this log due to the interaction between your PhotoVu, the Internet, and the photo sharing web site. If your RSS Feeds do not appear to be working, please check this log first. You will see status information on each RSS Feed, the photos downloaded, and any errors that have occurred.
- Networking Log: Information relating to networking is contained in this log.
- Web Server Log: This is mainly used by PhotoVu Technical Support to understand the interaction of your web browser with the PhotoVu's internal web server.
- System Log: Information relating to the PhotoVu operating system is located in this log.
- Failed Logins: This log is very useful if you suspect an unauthorized user was trying to log into your PhotoVu.
- NetSmart™ Total Photo Retries: When a photo fails to load for any reason, you will get a NetSmart Photo Retry. You can check the Photo Show Log to see if you have any failed attempts to load a photo at the time of the NetSmart Photo Retry. That would point to a problem with the photo or its location. Otherwise, you encountered network interference. If you continue to get a high number of NetSmart Photo Retries, this could be caused by a variety of reasons: distance from your wireless access point, metal (steel or aluminum) in your walls, microwave ovens, wireless phones, your neighbor's wireless access point, etc.
- NetSmart™ Total List Reloads: If you end up on the standard background PhotoVu images, please check this log. If you have one or more NetSmart List Reloads, this means that the PhotoVu tried to load every photo in your playlist and when the list was completed, the PhotoVu could not rebuild the playlist. This is typically caused by a large amount of wireless network interference. You will also see a high number of NetSmart Photo Retries when this happens. Overall, if the PhotoVu cannot find your network when it goes to rebuild the playlist, you will end up on the standard background images.
Sending Your Logs to PhotoVu
After you have tried to troubleshoot an issue or problem and cannot seem to resolve it, you can send your PhotoVu log information to PhotoVu Technical Support for assistance. You will need to open a Support Ticket under the Support section of our website and attach the logs to that form.
