Setting the Wireless (802.11) Properties

In this area, you are able to control all settings for the Wireless (802.11) Properties.

It is important that you change the Wireless Properties on the PhotoVu before changing your wireless access point.  If you change your wireless access point first (ESSID, WEP, Mode, etc.), the PhotoVu will lose communication with the wireless access point and you will not be able to use the PhotoVu Web Administration program to configure the PhotoVu.  If this happens, please set the wireless access point back to the prior settings.

If you lose communication with the PhotoVu during this process, you will need to use the Power Button on the PhotoVu and perform a "Set to Factory Defaults".  For your reference, the wireless Factory Defaults are:

If you have a mixed mode wireless access point, make sure you set the compatibility mode to both 802.11b and g.  Please see the manufacturer's documentation on how to configure this option.

Wireless Property Settings

Click on Advanced Settings, Networking.  You will see some typical wireless properties below:

A few notes on the above items:

Changing the Wireless Properties

To change your Wireless Properties, follow the instructions below:

  1. Click on Advanced Settings, Networking.

  2. Click on Modify Wireless Properties.

  3. You should see a form similar to the one below:

  4. Transmission Rate
Leave this value on "auto".  The speed will automatically be adjusted by the wireless access point.

  5. Mode
If you use Managed, the Managed (Infrastructure) Mode ESSID will be used.  If you use Ad-Hoc, the Ad-Hoc Mode ESSID will be used.

  6. Managed Mode ESSID or Airport Network Name
This is also known as the Apple Airport Network Name.  This setting is specific to the Managed (Infrastructure) Mode.  You can use up to 32 characters in the field.  The following characters between the brackets cannot be used: [  ` " ! @ / { } ; ].  Spaces are allowed in this field.

  7. Ad-Hoc Mode ESSID or Airport Network Name
This is also known as the Apple Airport Network Name.  This setting is specific to the Ad-Hoc Mode.  You can use up to 32 characters in the field.  The following characters between the brackets cannot be used: [  ` " ! @ / { } ; ].  Spaces are allowed in this field.

  8. Channel
Using the drop-down box, select the desired channel for the PhotoVu.  There are up to 14 channels available but, due to geographic restrictions, not all channels are available in your area.  Please check with your local regulatory body to ensure that you operate on the correct frequencies.  Your wireless access point will typically control this value.

  9. Fragmentation and RTS Threshold
Unless instructed by PhotoVu Technical Support, leave these settings at their default values.

  10. Security (WEP):
To use WEP, select 64 or 128-bit security.  To disable WEP, select Disable.  The "Disable" setting will automatically set the "Authorization Type" and "WEP Key" to the correct values once you click Change Wireless Network Properties.

  11. Authorization Type
Select your authorization type: Open System or Shared Key.  Please match this setting to your wireless access point.  The Apple Airport Extreme will only work with a Shared Key.

  12. WEP Key
Enter the key based upon the requested format: 10 characters for 64-bit and 26 characters for 128-bit.  Only the characters 0 through 9 and A through F can be used.  If you are using a Passphrase on your wireless access point, on the PhotoVu, you will need to enter the Hexadecimal Equivalent in this field.  The PhotoVu does not have Passphrase support.  If you are unsure on your Hexadecimal Equivalent, consult the documentation on your wireless access point.  Please notice the format of entering the key.  Most PhotoVu's require a ":" (colon) after each set of hexadecimal digits.

Many wireless access points (WAP) have up to four WEP keys that can be used with devices on your network.  It is important that you configure the PhotoVu with the first WEP key that is listing in the WEP key section of the WAP.  Otherwise, the PhotoVu will not be able to gain access to your network.

  13. Click on the Change Wireless Networking Properties to continue.

  14. At this point, you will lose contact with the PhotoVu until you configure your wireless access point to match the settings of the PhotoVu.

  15. TROUBLESHOOTING
If you change your wireless access point to match the PhotoVu settings and still cannot use the PhotoVu Web Administration program, press the Power Button on the PhotoVu to confirm your settings.  Look carefully for extra spaces or characters that you did not mean to add.  If so, temporarily change your wireless access point to match the incorrect setting(s) and reconfigure the PhotoVu.  If this does not seem to correct the problem, you will need to use the Power Button to set the PhotoVu to "Reset to Factory Defaults".  The default wireless settings are listed at the top of this page.
