Using Photo Directories
The Photo Locations, Directories menu allows you to manage your Photo Directories. Photo Directories are created from shared folders on your computer that have digital photos
stored in them and can be accessed over a network. Your computer can
be running the following operating systems: Windows®, Macintosh®, Linux®, and
Unix®.
Within the Photo Locations, Directories menu, you can:
- Add Photo DIrectories
- Make Photo Directories Active or Inactive
- Remove Inactive Photo Directories
As discussed in the Getting
Started - Quick Start section in the Main Online Help, you first need to share one or more
folders on the computers connected to your network. If you have not created shared folders on your computer, please go the Quick Start help section now. Sharing folders is very specific to each operating system.
For additional information, please contact your operating system manufacturer.
Adding a Photo Directory
In order to Add a Photo Directory, click the Photo Locations, Directories menu. You will see the following item displayed in the top section of the page:

- Type:
Click on the drop down box and select the the type of operating system from
which you are adding a Photo Directory. For example, if you have your
digital photos stored on a Macintosh then select "Mac". Supported types
are Windows, Mac, and NFS.
- Computer Name:
This is the name of the computer with the shared folder. The format of the computer name is dependant upon the Type of operating
system you are using. Windows uses alphanumeric characters (Full
computer name) where the
Mac, Linux, and Unix typically use IP addresses (i.e., 192.168.1.10). For Mac, Linux, and Unix users, please see the Advanced
Settings - Mappings menu on how to assign an IP address to an
alphanumeric name. See the table below on the valid characters
when entering a Computer Name into the PhotoVu Web Administration program.
- Computer Share Name:
This is the name of
the shared folder on the computer. On Windows,
this is the Share name. On the Mac, this is the Short Name. For NFS
users, you must start the Computer Share Name with the forward slash "/ ". See
the table below on valid characters when entering a Computer Share Name into the
PhotoVu Web Administration program. Only NFS Share Names can contain
spaces.
If you click on [Computer Share Name...], you can retrieve the list of Computer Share Names for Windows and Mac Types. To search for available Computer Share Names, first enter a Computer Name. Next, enter an administrator Computer Username and Computer Password. If you are using Windows Simple File Sharing (the default for Windows XP), you do not need a username and password. After you click on [Computer Share Name...], you should see the available Computer Share Names. If not, please check your Computer Name, Computer Username, and Computer Password. Click on the Share Name to use.
- Computer Username and
Password:
For
Windows and Mac Types, the Computer Username and Password is typically the same
username and password you
use to login to that computer. It is required for both Windows
and Mac computers.
Windows Users:
Enter the same username and password as you use
to login to your PC. The PC login screen is shown after you start up
Windows. If using Windows XP Simple File Sharing, just enter "guest"
for the Computer Username and "guest" for the Computer Password. If you are using
Windows XP Professional with Simple File Sharing turned off, you MUST use an
administrator account on your PC that has a password. If not, you will
not be able to add these Photo Directories.
Mac Users:
Enter the same username and password as you use to
login to your Mac. The Mac login screen is shown after you start up
your Mac. Most of the time, the Mac Short Name and the full Mac
username (Name) will match. If not, always
use the Short Name for the Computer Username field above.
NFS Users:
No username or password is required.
